We are a family passionate about being in nature and wellbeing. As a neurodiverse family we have gone on our own journey where we have become highly aware of the need for quite low arousal environments. We have learnt the importance they can bring to nurturing positive experiences, being able to escape the confinements of home and on occasions make the small steps back out in to the world after years of isolation.
The Lands aim is to support families of children or family members with high anxiety, who struggle to leave their homes. We run volunteering sessions for small groups and small carers meet ups for parents. We also plan to run small group workshops on crafts, wellbeing and create York's first Verbal Dysprqxia/Speach group.
We will be creating The Land in to a tranquil nature reserve. We plan to reinstate hedge rows, wildflower meadows, plant trees, create wheelchair friendly paths, run more volunteering sessions, create quiet seating areas throughout the site, landscape the pond, and have a storage area full of different types of sensory equipment and equipment needed to support individuals visits. The space will grow in wildlife creating more pathways and green corridors.
We strongly believe in equal opportunity which is why we are creating such a space. Individuals with high anxiety, complex autism cannot always access public spaces, outdoor communal areas, school environments. This can be due to unpredictability’s not knowing who will be there, too many people, not having a safe space to retreat in to if everything becomes to sensory, becoming over whelmed etc. We aim to normalise that not everyone is the same and that it is wonderful, it is what makes us all unique and if their is a hidden number of individuals hidden from society that need these types of quiet spaces it should be embraced as it can only be a healthy positive space and one we could all learn and grow from creating more acceptance, compassion and understanding of hidden disabilitys.
